Then the celebration began at Dodger Stadium. McNeil Mets advanced to the semifinals by beating Smith Orioles in two games, but both contests were close.

Davis to pinch-hit against left-hander Tanner Scott and blasted a walk-off homer to left field. After looking at his camera to Davis, and wishing him a belated happy birthday, McNeil took the series lead and shifted the series to virtual Baltimore for Game 2.

With the game tied at 1 in the third, he used Brandon Nimmo as a pinch-hitter against righty Hunter Harvey and launched a go-ahead homer to right field.

McNeil sat back in his seat and shouted in celebration. McNeil then made it back-to-back homers by going deep with the digital version of himself.

He called upon Dellin Betances to pitch the third inning and worked around a two-out walk to Smith to clinch the series victory.

Giolito was on the verge of upsetting Bichette when he found himself in dangerous territory. With a two-run lead in the bottom of the third, Giolito allowed Bichette to load the bases with just one out.

Both players were silent, locked in on their screens, with Game 3 on the line. But Giolito and the White Sox prevailed, forcing Bichette to ground into a double play to advance to the semifinals.

All Bichette could do was laugh off the loss as the virtual White Sox dogpiled in front of the mound at Rogers Centre. Giolito's two victories came on the road in virtual Toronto.

In Game 1, the White Sox hung on to win, , despite Bichette launching a two-run homer with virtual Bichette in the bottom of the third.

The two teams then went to Guaranteed Rate Field, where Giolito put himself on the mound to pitch in front of a rowdy crowd that was waving white towels throughout the entire game.

Gotta make it happen in real life, though. In the second, he had runners on first and third with one out and accidentally sent his runner home on a ground ball to third.

When he tried to send the runner back to third, he sent all runners back to their original bases, causing an inning-ending double play.

Giolito rebounded in Game 3 with a victory to advance to the second round. He said he made some changes to his game before the quarterfinals and is looking to better his game before he plays in the semifinals.

I may have to get into practice mode a little bit. Once again, Happ had his back against the wall. Once again, the "W" flag of the Cubs still improbably waved over the MLB The Show Players League after Happ pulled off a stunning upset of the high-powered Gallo in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs.

Happ took a tough loss in Game 1 and was down to his final three outs of the tournament when he carried a deficit into the bottom of the third inning of Game 2.

Instead of folding, Happ completed a four-run comeback with a walk-off, three-run blast by Willson Contreras to force a decisive third game.

A trouncing of Gallo in the finale completed the heroics. It was a comeback from the brink of elimination reminiscent of Happ's improbable run to make it to the playoffs in the first place.

Happ had a record in the first half of the regular season before winning 10 of his final 11 games to sneak into the bracket. Now, he's a semifinalist.

Perhaps Gallo was too distracted by Happ's incredible physique to properly focus on the game. No, really. Gallo was visibly stunned when virtual Happ first stepped to the plate in Game 1, the Cubs outfielder's muscles nearly spilling out of his uniform.

I'm an absolute unit. All I do is hit flys, tris and bench. That's it. The shock never wore off, and Gallo was awestruck every time Happ came to the plate in the series.

Dude, who did you pay to get that? I mean, wow. Built like a middle linebacker. It doesn't look like Gallo ever properly recovered from the intimidation factor of baseball's new virtual Adonis.

And by the time he recovered his bearings, Happ had already put the team on his, uh, extremely muscular back. Follow him on Twitter and Facebook and read his blog.

The game was delayed by 20 minutes before the top of the fifth inning, as home plate umpire Jeff Nelson had to leave the game, due to the effects of being hit by a foul ball during the top of the fourth inning; Kerwin Danley , who had been the second base umpire, took over behind the plate.

Houston added two runs in the seventh on a wild pitch by Yankee relief pitcher Zack Britton that allowed Altuve to score, and a sacrifice fly by Yuli Gurriel that scored Michael Brantley.

Cole pitched seven shutout innings for the Astros, allowing four hits with five walks and seven strikeouts. Gleyber Torres put the Yankees on the board in the eighth inning with a home run off Joe Smith.

Houston closer Roberto Osuna pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the postseason. Game 4 was originally scheduled for October 16, but was postponed and rescheduled to October 17 due to the " bomb cyclone " that hit the Northeast.

The Yankees scored once in the first inning, forcing in a run with two walks after having runners on first and second with two out.

The Astros took a 3—1 lead in the third inning, via a three-run home run by George Springer. New York starter Masahiro Tanaka was removed one batter into the sixth inning; he was replaced by Chad Green , who gave up a three-run home run to Carlos Correa three batters later.

Tanaka was charged with four runs on four hits, while striking out one. A double by Alex Bregman followed by two Yankee errors gave the Astros a run in the eighth.

With runners on first and third and nobody out, Yankee left-hander CC Sabathia entered the game in relief of Adam Ottavino and threw 20 pitches to five batters, retiring two, before leaving with a shoulder injury to a standing ovation from fans and players on both teams.

The Yankees removed Sabathia from their roster the next day, rendering him ineligible to pitch in the World Series and ending his storied year career.

The Yankees were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth, as Roberto Osuna concluded matters by retiring Gleyber Torres on a flyout to Springer and the Astros were a victory away from playing Washington in the World Series.

Game 5 was originally scheduled for October 17, but was rescheduled to October 18 when Game 4 was postponed.

The Astros took an early 1—0 lead, as George Springer led off the game with an infield single, went to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a ground out, and then scored on a wild pitch.

DJ LeMahieu tied the game with a home run to lead off the bottom of the first, followed four batters later by an Aaron Hicks three-run homer that hit the right-field foul pole to give the Yankees a 4—1 lead.

New York starting pitcher James Paxton left after six innings, having allowed one run on four hits while striking out nine. Houston starter Justin Verlander went seven innings, striking out nine while allowing four runs on five hits, and suffered the loss.

With no scoring other than in the first inning, Aroldis Chapman set down the side in order in the top of the ninth, earning his second save this postseason, as he retired Springer on a groundout to Gio Urshela to send the series back to Houston and extend the Yankees' season.

This was the first game in MLB postseason history 1, games that both teams scored in the first inning, then were held scoreless the rest of the game.

In a "bullpen game", [17] the starting pitchers were Brad Peacock , who had pitched a scoreless eighth inning in Game 5 for Houston, and Chad Green for New York.

Yuli Gurriel gave Houston an early lead, with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. Green left after the first inning, having allowed three runs on two hits, while recording one strikeout.

A Gio Urshela home run in the top of the fourth inning trimmed Houston's lead to 3—2. In the bottom of the sixth, Alex Bregman hit into a fielder's choice , scoring the fourth run for the Astros.

In the top of the ninth inning, an Urshela single was followed two batters later by a DJ LeMahieu home run that tied the game at 4.
